Emerging Leaders: US-China Study Delegation

Sponsored by The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) has partnered with organizations in the U.S. and China to offer students an opportunity to become global citizens and experience the immersive China study abroad program. The U.S.-China Study Delegation, as the program is called, provides African-American students with the opportunity to experience Chinese culture and learn Mandarin during a two-week visit to China. Through this program, the CBCF is working to increase career and study options involving US-China relations, expanding opportunities for African Americans in an era of increasing globalization.

 

Eligibility

  • Majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics-related (STEM) fields, business or trade
  • Completing their second, third, or fourth year of college in May 2016 based on credits earned
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Have a valid passport at the time they submit their application
  • U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Live or attend school in a CBC member district
  • Enrolled in an HBCU, predominantly-black schools, or majority institutions; for community college students, must be graduating in May 2016

Fulbright U.S. Student

Program

Purpose

Provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application. Permanent residents are not eligible. Please review the Ineligibility section below in relation to the eligibility of dual citizens.
  • Applicants must have a conferred bachelor's degree or the equivalent before the start of the grant.
  • In the creative and performing arts, four years of professional training and/or experience meets the basic eligibility requirement.
  • Applicants must be in good health. Grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Medical Certificate from a physician.
  • Applicants must have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country sufficient to communicate with the people and to carry out the proposed study/research. This is especially important for projects in the social sciences and the humanities.

Boren Fellowship

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Eligibility

  • A U.S. citizen at the time of application
  • A high school graduate, or have earned a GED
  • Matriculated in an undergraduate degree program located within the United States accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Boren Scholars must remain matriculated in their undergraduate programs for the duration of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete.
  • Applying to a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.  Boren Scholarships are not for study in the United States.

MARSHALL Scholarship

To enable intellectually distinguished young Americans to study in the UK

Eligibility

  • Be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship or by the time they take up their scholarship i.e. September 2016)
  • Hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;
  • Have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 on their undergraduate degree.  (Applicants must have a GPA of 3.7 at the time of application)
  • Have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2013.

Pickering Fellowship

Purpose

Programs provide academic and professional preparation for outstanding candidates to enter the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service, representing America’s interests abroad. Pickering Fellows are undergraduate and graduate students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

  • Only individuals who are United States citizens at the time of application will be considered
  • Applicants must be in the junior year of undergraduate study (or equivalent) 
  • Winners are expected to enroll in a two-year, full-time master’s degree program in an academic field relevant to the work of the Foreign Service
    • The Fellowship does not fund law or joint law degree programs
  •  Only U.S. institutions based in the U.S. are eligible
  •  Applicants must be available to fulfill the summer internship obligations (summer 2016 & 2017)
  • Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale must be maintained throughout participation in the program.

Rangel Graduate Fellowship 

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants  must be seeking admission to enter graduate school in the fall of 2015 for a two-year program at a U.S. university. They can be in their senior year of their undergraduate studies, graduating by June 2015, or they can be college graduates. 
  • Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.

Application Information

  • A personal statement (in 600 words or less)
  • Two letters of recommendation:
    • One from a faculty member
    • One from a community leader or other individual who can comment on the applicant's non-academic accomplishments and his/her potential Proof of U.S. citizenship with a copy of: (choose one)
  •   Student Aid Report (SAR) generated from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form
  • GRE or GMAT Scores (copy of report sent to student)
  • Official Financial Aid Statement from your senior year, if you received financial aid.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities the applicant has attended for credit.

Humanity In Action

Eligibility

Applicants to the Humanity in Action Fellowship must be currently enrolled undergraduate students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) or recent graduates. For the 2015 Fellowship, we define recent graduates as individuals from the undergraduate classes of 2013 and 2014 at accredited, four-year undergraduate colleges or universities in the United States. Applicants of minority backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. If you are an American citizen studying at a foreign university, you are eligible to apply to the Humanity in Action Fellowship through the United States. If you are an American student studying at a university in Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands or Poland, you may be eligible to apply through the Humanity in Action offices in those countries. Please contact those offices directly to confirm your eligibility.

If you are a non-U.S. citizen studying at a university in the United States, you are eligible to apply to the Humanity in Action Fellowship through the U.S. office.

Purpose

Humanity in Action's programs concern human rights activities generally, but they focus specifically on the relationship between majority and minority groups in the countries in which the programs take place: Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Poland.
